Detox for passenger after assault
  • Peter Paramjeet Singh, 35, has been ordered to enter a detoxification program as part of his bail conditions after appearing in a Melbourne court on charges of endangering the safety of an aircraft and of assaulting a crew member.

He is alleged to have twice tried to open a door on a Melbourne-bound Qantas light from Perth on Saturday. He is also accused of assaulting a crew member of flight 768. The West Australian resident is accused of prejudicing the safe operation of the aircraft and, secondly, with recklessly endangering the safety of the aircraft by attempting to open the door.

Singh appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on charges laid after his arrest by Australian Federal Police when the plane landed at Melbourne Airport.

Prosecutor Erin McAuley told the court that investigators would seek an extension of time to supply the brief of evidence as most of the 20 witnesses to the alleged incidents were airline staff.

Defence solicitor Stephen Peterson said the prosecution had agreed to Singh's bail with certain conditions that included daily reporting to police, living with his mother in Noble Park and not attending points of international departure.

The magistrate was asked to suspend some conditions pending Singh entering a rehabilitation centre for detoxification. Singh was told the reasons for being granted bail included a lack of relevant prior history and the support of his mother, with whom he will later live.
