15 November 2011: Russia to scrap fees for flights over Siberian airspace
- Russia has since the early 1970's, imposed a fee on airlines whose flight paths crossed Siberian airspace. In 2006 Russia had agreed to eliminate the fees but the government backtracked by linking the agreement to its acceptance into the World Trade Organisation, something which had seemed unlikely until a recent flurry of negotiations cleared the way for Russia to join the WTO. However the European Union has stated that it would veto the Russian entry unless it received a clear commitment from the Moscow government that the fee struction would be scrapped.
Russian stealth fighter aborts take-off at MAKS
- Russia's new 5th generation fighter plane, the Sukhoi PAK-FA/T-50, was forced to abort take off before a demonstration flight at the MAKS Air Show on Aug. 21, at Ramenskoye air base, near Moscow. The aircraft suffered a flameout in the right-hand Saturn engine. The second prototype of the stealth fighter failed to take-off after bursts of flames erupted from the engine.
Sukhoi Superjet has first landing in Moscow
- The Sukhoi Superjet-100 plane has performed its first passenger flight by the Armavia airline on the Yerevan-Moscow route. The aircraft with 90 passengers on board landed successfully at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport, according to the airport's media service. The plane named in honour of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin landed in Moscow at 04:45 msk with more than 90 passengers aboard.
Sukhoi to design stretch Superjet 100
- While Sukhoi is busy reviewing the its product family, the company is more interested in producing a stretched version of the Superjet 100 (with between 100 and 130 seats) rather than a shrunken one. This is according to Superjet International chief executive Carlo Logli.
A final decision will be announced before the Paris air show in June.
